Archidona Abierta (Outdoor Archidona)

Archidona, mucho más de lo que imaginas.

RUTA DE LOS BLASONES (Heraldic Route)

The pieces of heraldry constitute by themselves true works of art. They are indeed artistic elements that were carved by artisans, usually, native ones. The heraldic ensemble of Archidona represents an excellent example of the imagery of those craftsmen who chiselled their works directly on the walls or moved the piece from the workshop to their placement. One of the attractions of our town is its valuable route of the escutcheons. In them you can contemplate the history of those who lived in this beautiful town in the recent centuries, and also admire their great artistic value.

Our starting point is the Plaza Ochavada. If we leave through the alley in the east side, we get to the Caños de las Monjas, a beautiful fountain that supplied this suburb with water. We go up a nice stairway and, in the left side of Calle Nueva, we find the escutcheon of the Guerrero-Solano family.

Going a little further up, directly opposite the Iglesia Conventual de las Monjas Mínimas, can be seen the scutcheon of Núñez de Castro. Our ascent finishes at the Museo Municipal -the former Pósito (Granary) or Casa de la Cilla-, where is located on the right edge of the entrance façade the blazon of Pedro Téllez Girón and at the right of this gate, the one of Catalina Enríquez de Ribera. We continue our ascent through Calle Virgen de Gracia up to the convergence point with Calle Almohalla, where we see a scutcheon that hasn’t been associated at the time with any particular family, since it has symbols of several lineages jumbled together.

We go down again through the Paseo de la Victoria, where we discover next to the statue of Blas Infante the scutcheon of the Vilchez family, marked out by whitewashed mouldings.

Returning to Calle Carrera, the blazons of Leonor de Morales and the Cárdenas family are placed in a magnificent long balcony. We continue our walkthrough until reaching the Escuelas Pías (Pious Schools) -the current middle school Luis Barahona de Soto- and later we enter the alley Sebastián Gómez Ostío, finishing in the convergence point with Calle Pilarejo. Here we will get closer to the Convento de Santo Domingo, whose grandeur will be displayed before our eyes, and where can be admired the scutcheon of the Counts of Ureña, located on the transverse arch of its church.

Here concludes our route, without forgetting to admire the panoramic view over the wide meadow and the Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers’ Rock).

RUTA DE LOS BLASONES

ARCHIDONA Y BLAS INFANTE

3-Plaza  Ochavada
4-Paseo de la Victoria
5-Recinto Amurallado

In 2013, after the signing of the “Declaración de Municipios” and the “Mesa por la Ruta de Blas Infante” (the latter signed in Archidona on June 5th), was configured the route through the municipalities related to the life of the father of the Andalusian nationalism.

Archidona represents an undeniable milestone in the career of Blas Infante that is linked to a determining factor like his training, in this case, his high school years as a resident student of the Escuelas Pías (School of the Piarists), building of the current middle school “Luis Barahona de Soto”. That was a time of experiences, besides his academic education, that would be building up his perception and social awareness, like watching people in need being supplied with food in the Puerta de la Guiropa or the experiences with his classmates of humble origins.

Archidona would leave deep marks in the memory of Blas Infante. The sight from the art classroom of the current middle school, from which could be appreciated a broad beautiful panoramic of the Peña de los Enamorados, would probably lead him to learn about the legend. In fact, one of the frescos of orient inspiration in his house depicts a couple of lovers riding a horse. Also, it must be assumed that his years in Archidona contributed to theconcern and discovery of Al-Andalus, due to his interest in the knowledge of the historic Arsiduna and the perpetual view of the walled enclosure of the “Villa Alta”.

The length of the route is 3 km and runs approximately through:

  1. Instituto Luis Barahona de Soto “Escuelas Pías”.
  2. Puerta de la Guiropa
  3. Plaza Ochavada
  4. Paseo de la Victoria
  5. Recinto Amurallado (Walled enclosure)
